Gavin is the VP of Product Engineering at Ingka Group. Ingka Group, formerly known as IKEA Group, is the world’s largest home furnishing retailer and owns and operates 367+ IKEA stores in 30 markets (FY18) under franchise agreements with Inter IKEA Systems B.V.
Gavin has a long and diverse career in technology, starting at grass roots level to ultimately running large and forward-thinking organisations. At INGKA Group, Gavin has the overall responsibility to help build the engineering team within a brand new digital organisation. He is also responsible for co-developing the INGKA technical strategy with the Chief Technology Officer, as well as maintaining a technical roadmap that will continue to further the company’s innovation efforts.
Gavin has led many technical transformations across a mix of sectors. In retail, he led the technical arm of two industry shifting movements: During his time as head of Retail Technology at Sainsbury’s (one of the UK’s largest supermarket chains) he led the movement to self-checkout and self scan technologies. He subsequently moved to Tesco where he took their established online grocery business international before transforming their non-food online business and taking them through the UK’s first Black Friday.
Gavin is motivated by scale and agility, which led him into the technology sector of online sports betting, becoming Director of Engineering for the sports section of one of the UK’s leading betting and gaming businesses, Paddy Power Betfair, which has one of the world’s largest in-house built exchange platforms and high volume transactions events such as the Grand National and the Champions League Final. Gavin held a pivotal role in the merger of the two organisations’ technology systems which resulted in the creation of a single customer platform to run its core business.
After a short advisory role at KPMG where he helped shape their Digital offering, Gavin hopes to help transform the INGKA digital business into a truly leading global retailer.
